Ingredients
For the meat mixture:
1 lb lean ground beef
1 small onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup pizza sauce or marinara sauce
1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
Salt and pepper to taste
1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1/2 cup sliced beef pepperoni (or turkey pepperoni if you prefer)
For serving:
4 hamburger buns, toasted
1/2 cup shredded mozzarella or provolone cheese (for topping, optional)
Fresh basil or parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned and fully cooked. Drain any excess fat if necessary.
Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet with the beef. Cook for 2–3 minutes, until the onion becomes soft and translucent.
Stir in the pizza sauce or marinara sauce, Italian seasoning, crushed red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and pepper. Mix everything together and let it simmer for about 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
Add the beef pepperoni (or turkey pepperoni if preferred), shredded mozzarella, and grated Parmesan. Stir until the cheese is melted and the mixture is thick and cheesy.
Toast the hamburger buns until lightly golden. Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto the bottom halves of each bun.
Top with additional shredded mozzarella or provolone if desired, then place the top bun on each sandwich.
Garnish with fresh basil or parsley if using, and serve hot.
Notes
-
For a spicy kick, add more red pepper flakes or hot Italian sausage.
-
Use whole-wheat buns for extra fiber.
-
Swap in dairy-free cheese for a lactose-intolerant version.
-
This mixture also works great on baked potatoes or over pasta for a pizza-style casserole.
-
Leftovers reheat beautifully — even better the next day!
