Air Fryer Sandwiches: From Classic Grilled Cheese to Ham & Cheese

  • Author: Elina

Description

This Air Fryer Sandwiches recipe pairs the classic comfort of grilled cheese with the savory satisfaction of ham to deliver perfectly crisp, golden-brown sandwiches in minutes. Ideal for quick lunches, after-school snacks, or light dinners, each sandwich layers softened butter, choice cheeses, and your favorite ham variety between two slices of sturdy bread. The air fryer’s rapid hot-air circulation ensures even browning and a gooey interior without excess oil.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 slices white or sourdough bread
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese (about 100 g)
  • 4 slices Swiss or mozzarella cheese (about 100 g)
  • Optional add-ins (choose any):
    • 4 slices cooked turkey bacon, halved
    • 4 slices chicken ham, halved
    • 4 slices ripe tomato

Instructions

  • Preheat the air fryer to 190 °C (375 °F) for 3 minutes.
  • Spread butter evenly on one side of each bread slice.
  • On the unbuttered side of 4 slices, layer one cheddar and one Swiss (or mozzarella) slice. Add any optional fillings. Top with remaining bread slices, buttered side out.
  • Place the assembled sandwiches in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Cook for 4 minutes.
  • Flip each sandwich carefully, then cook for an additional 3–4 minutes, until bread is golden brown and cheese is melted.
  • Remove from the air fryer and let rest for 1 minute. Slice in half and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Bread: Opt for slightly thicker slices like sourdough or multigrain to withstand fillings without leaking.

  • Cheese Cuts: Uniformly slice cheeses or use pre-sliced for consistent melting.

  • Preheat: Always preheat your air fryer to 190 °C (375 °F) for best results.

  • Make-Ahead: Assemble and wrap sandwiches for up to two days in the fridge or freeze up to one month.

  • Reheating: Reheat at 160 °C (320 °F) for 2–3 minutes to restore crispness.

  • Variations: Swap in pesto, kimchi, or fruit preserves for unique flavor profiles.
